The current setup recognizes English text. It handles standard fonts very well: screenshots, scanned printed pages, signs, labels and receipts. Accuracy depends on image quality — the clearer and higher-contrast the picture, the better the result.
The engine is optimized for printed text. Very neat handwriting may be partially recognized, but expect errors — Tesseract-class OCR models are trained primarily on typeset fonts. For typed text, accuracy is excellent.
On first use, the browser downloads the OCR engine (a few megabytes) and initializes it in a background worker. Subsequent recognitions start instantly. This is a one-time cost per browser, and it is what makes offline, private processing possible.
Yes. Recognition happens entirely on your device — the image is never uploaded, and neither is the extracted text. This makes the tool suitable for contracts, medical records, IDs and any material you would not want on a third-party server.
Use the sharpest, highest-resolution version of the image you have. Crop to just the text area, make sure the text is horizontal, and avoid heavy compression artifacts before uploading — our image compressor's High preset is a good pre-processing step.
